Just back from a few days of sun at the super chic and very lovely W Retreat and Spa Vieques Island. The hotel is just nine months old,but already gathering a wonderfully diverse clientele. The slightly sleepy and funky island of Vieques is just off the coast of Puerto Rico and is reached by small puddle-jumper from San Juan. The airport on Vieques is little more than an 80's style pavilion, but the W has their own waiting area that immediately sets he mood for your visit. Both airport lounge and hotel were designed by Italian design guru Patricia Urquiola and is fabulously unconventional. Using vivid Latin American style pattern everywhere, the resort definitely is of the place, and simultaneously other-worldly. Chic loungey areas are everywhere. W Hotels can be a bit of a crazy party scene, the the W Vieques is super laid back. The staff is lovely and warm. All of the pre-requisite amenities are here: Alain Ducasse restaurant-check, spa-check, multiple pools-check, two very pretty beaches-check check and the main pavilion which opens onto a staggeringly beautiful view (they call it the living room)-check. All this adds up to a wonderful place to relax and recharge.
